Employer Services and Training



Employee Training

Skilled employees represent the single greatest competitive advantage of any business. P&HCC can provide targeted, quality employee training to meet your organizational needs. Our professional workforce staff strives to serve regional employers by providing training solutions to develop and sustain a qualified workforce, supporting economic development and community enrichment.

Additionally, P&HCC serves regional employers by providing training solutions to develop and sustain a qualified workforce, supporting economic development and community enrichment. Additionally, P&HCC offers facilities to assist local industries with training and rapid start-ups for new businesses. The Manufacturing Engineering & Technology Complex (MET) features a 73’ x 104’ x 23’ Workforce Flex Space, classroom space, and a large conference room. These facilities are available for training on company-specific equipment or providing customized training on P&HCC’s equipment sets.

Custom Designed Training

P&HCC’s professional workforce training staff can design, develop, and customize training programs to meet a company’s specific needs, scheduling demands, and budget constraints. Through organizational consulting, we conduct thorough assessments using tools such as evaluations, facilitated focus groups, and job profiling.

Professional workforce training staff partners with clients to:

Pre-Employment Training

Pre-employment training is a proven method to identify the best applicants in the community and train potential employees on key elements of the job. The pre-employment training program includes assessment of applicants on skill areas specific to the needs of the employer and development of a customized, generally short-term training class.

Job Skills Assessments

Job skills assessments are a proven method for identifying the best applicants and preparing potential employees for critical job elements. P&HCC partners with various job skills assessment providers to assist local employers and new businesses in evaluating workforce needs and incumbent worker skills. Our workforce staff can assess potential and current employees on skills specific to the employer’s needs and develop customized, short-term training.

ACT WorkKeys

WorkKeys is a national job skills assessment system, measuring “real-world” skills that employers believe are critical to job success. This system enables educators to identify gaps between student skills and employer needs, which will, in turn, improve students’ success in entry-level and subsequent jobs. WorkKeys enables businesses to reduce turnover, overtime, and waste while increasing morale through effective selection decisions and training processes. As a WorkKeys service scoring center, P&HCC handles testing and scoring.

Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test (BMCT)

BMCT is a widely used and extensively validated assessment of mechanical aptitude. For more than 60 years, this instrument has helped organizations select the best candidates for mechanical, repair, and industrial occupations. The BMCT can help identify candidates with good spatial perception and mechanical reasoning abilities, as well as with an aptitude for learning mechanical processes and tasks.

DiSC®

DiSC is a personality assessment tool used to improve teamwork, communication, and productivity in the workplace. The DiSC personality system is the universal language of behavior. Research has shown that behavioral characteristics can be grouped together in four major divisions called personality styles. People with similar styles tend to exhibit specific behavioral characteristics common to that style. All people share these four styles in varying degrees of intensity. The acronym DiSC stands for the four personality styles represented by the letters: D (Dominance); I (Influence); S (Steadiness); C (Conscientiousness).

Perfect for businesses of any size, looking to test hundreds of prospects or just one, Total Testing offer employers customization in pre- employment testing and employee development.

Wonderlic

Wonderlic provides employee assessments for each phase of the hiring process. Employment tests include job-specific screening questionnaires, cognitive ability tests, personality tests, skills tests and surveys. Used individually, these employee assessments provide valuable enhancements to an existing employee selection process. Combined, they efficiently gather relevant information and provide a comprehensive “whole person” view of candidate qualifications for efficient, objective employee selection.

Professional Development

P&HCC offers professional development courses tailored to meet the educational needs of lifelong learners in the community. While these programs do not award college credit, students can earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits. Certificates of completion are provided for each successfully completed course for continuing education documentation purposes. Computers and Technology

Basic to Intermediate Excel. This self-paced online course introduces new users to essential Excel features and guides them towards mastering intermediate-level skills and advanced functionalities.

Basic to Intermediate Word. Over a series of structured modules, participants will learn how to create, format, and manage professional documents in Microsoft Word. Starting with fundamental concepts like navigating the interface and basic text formatting, the course progresses to more advanced features including styles, templates, and collaborative tools.

Construction and Trades

P&HCC offers continuing education courses for tradesmen looking to renew their licenses, as well as a business pre-licensure course for aspiring contractors.

Continuing Education for Tradesman. Continuing education (CE) is essential for tradesmen to maintain professional licenses and stay updated on industry codes, safety standards, and best practices. P&HCC offers online CE courses for electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and gas fitters. This online tradesman license renewal course provides a flexible, cost-effective option to renew your tradesman license. Covers new definitions, code changes, general requirements, impacts on the job, general use and special equipment included in the respective codes.

Contractor Business Licensing. This course is designed for individuals applying for a Class A, B, or C Contractor Business License in Virginia, as well as those changing business type. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of the statutes and regulations governing contractor licensing in Virginia.

This course covers an overview of license classifications and their qualifications, standards of practice for contractors, and prohibited acts and how to avoid violations of the regulations. While this course is not specifically designed to prepare the student to take the contractor licensing exam, it is recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR), and the Board for Contractors as meeting the requirements for pre-licensure or remedial education. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion to include with their contractor license application. The course fee includes a textbook and handouts, which will serve as valuable references in both managing a construction business and preparing for the contractor licensing exam in Virginia.

Workplace Safety

OSHA 10 for General Industry

This 10-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) outreach training program is targeted to entry level workers and covers general industry safety and health hazards. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an official OSHA 10 card from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).

Topics covered include:

  • Introduction to OSHA
  • Walking and Working Surfaces
  • Emergency Action Plans and Fire Prevention/Protection
  • Electrical Safety
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Hazard Communication.
  • At least two additional topics from a list of electives will be covered.

OSHA 30 for General Industry.

This 30-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Outreach Training Program for General Industry provides a comprehensive overview of safety practices and regulations to help identify and manage workplace hazards. This course is beneficial for supervisors, managers, and workers with safety responsibilities across various sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, and education. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an official OSHA 30 card from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).
