Big IDEA Challenge
Hosted by the IDEA Center, this 30-day challenge gives entrepreneurs, individuals, and teams the opportunity to draft and build a prototype of their business, product, or technology into reality for a chance to win a prize package.
Fabrication Laboratory
The Fabrication Laboratory, located within the IDEA Center, provides unique digital fabrication opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs that are impractical or uneconomical with mass production. The Fab Lab is equipped with an extensive array of tools, including a 3D printer, 3D scanner, laser engraver, vinyl cutter, CNC router, plasma cutter, mini-mill, vacuum former, injection molder, and welder. We provide training sessions tailored for businesses and entrepreneurs, as well as classes for individuals seeking personal enrichment. Additionally, entrepreneurs who successfully complete a training class may choose to become a member of the Fab Lab. Members enjoy exclusive unlimited access to the equipment for a monthly fee. PUMP (Pull Up Mentor Program)
Hosted by the IDEA Center, PUMP (Pull Up Mentor Program) are free, drop-in events designed to connect entrepreneurs with valuable resources to support your business journey. Whether you’re a business owner looking to grow, an aspiring entrepreneur with a new idea, or an innovator with a fresh product or service, PUMP offers a chance to discuss your ideas with a member of the RISE Navigator team. Small Business Bootcamps
Startup and Grow Martinsville-Henry County are entrepreneurial mentoring programs that are hosted by the IDEA Center semi-annually. Startup M-HC is an eight-week program for new entrepreneurs planning to start or who have recently launched a business. This bootcamp introduces, demonstrates, and applies innovation start-up training principles from the inception of an idea through the development of a viable business strategy. Grow M-HC is a four-week program designed for experienced business owners looking to elevate their ventures. The application process, sponsored by Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce, is competitive, and participants must adhere to program guidelines.
Verizon Innovative Learning Camp
P&HCC and Verizon are equipping the next generation with skills for a future full of opportunities. The Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers program was launched to provide middle school students with access to a brighter future. This hands-on, engaging program enriches learning through design thinking, 3D printing, augmented reality, social entrepreneurship, and mentorship, creating a more diverse pipeline for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.

Entrepreneurial workshops are offered to help your business excel.
Advertising on a Budget. Need help branding your business with advertising and simple graphic designs? In this advertising course, you will learn how to create a basic logo and digital flyers for social media using Canva.
Be Your Own Boss. Have you ever thought of turning your ”SIDE HUSTLE” into more than just that? Starting a business can be overwhelming, but this course will give you step-by-step instructions on how to start your business. Upon leaving this course you will have the resources you need to make your business dream a reality.
Building a Business or Personal Website. In today’s world of business, having a website is a must. Most customers will visit a business website before making a purchase, and having a stunning website will help your business generate more revenue. This course aims to teach you how to create a 2-4-page business website.
Collecting Cash from Credit. Cash has become more obsolete. It appears that businesses are taking less cash and more credit-only payments. If you are losing revenue because you take cash-only payments, let’s talk about taking your business to the next level with a Point-of-Sales system. This course will teach you how to collect your cash from credit.
Taking Your Social Media to the Next Level. Explore ways to increase your brand and business presence in the virtual world and learn more about how to use the tools available to you to increase your customer base through positive social media engagement.
The Art of Storytelling-Strategies to Create a Powerful Narrative for Your Business. While marketing and advertising can sometimes be used interchangeably with business storytelling, we believe there are some significant distinctions. Whereas marketing and advertising can hyperfocus on products and services, business storytelling is a much deeper dive into the heart of the business owner and the origin of the business. Having a strong story for a business can assist with guiding an entrepreneur toward the right storytelling devices, while eliminating time and resource wasters. This is an informative and interactive workshop that will remind participants why they started their business and how to effectively communicate why everyone should know about them.

Dance
Contemporary Line Dance. This class introduces basic line dance steps and incorporates those steps into fun dances to a variety of music genres. Sue-Ann Ehmann will teach dances that can be done to your favorite tunes - Pop, Country, Oldies, and more!
Popular Party Line Dance. Join Sue-Ann Ehmann as she teaches you your favorite “Party” dances like the Cupid Shuffle, Electric Slide, Wobble, Cha-Cha Slide, Biker’s Shuffle and more! Line dance is a proven stress reliever and an excellent way to fit exercise and fitness into your life.
Fab Lab
3D Printing Architecture. Students will use 3D modeling software, Tinkercad, to design miniature versions of famous architecture and then 3D print their designs.
Beginner’s Guide to 3D Printing. Discover the world of 3D Printing! In this introductory course, participants will gain an understanding of 3D design and printing fundamentals in a fun and easy way. You won’t believe the amazing things you can do. Covered topics include safety, operations, software, materials, and project design best practices. Upon completion of the class, students will be certified to schedule time on the 3D printers for their own projects. No prior 3D printing experience or technical knowledge needed.
Build Your Own Electric Guitar. In this 8-week hands-on course, students learn to design and build your own electric guitar using the ShopBot Desktop Max CNC router. Students will learn woodworking, electronics, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and manufacturing basics. Students will leave the class with a custom-designed guitar built with their own hands.
Create a Personalized Wreath Using the Laser. Learn the basics of laser engraving while creating a personalized wreath! While using graphics software like Adobe Illustrator and Lightburn, students will design their wreath then cut, etch, and engrave their designs. With this incredibly precise tool, the possibilities are endless! Covered topics include safety, operations, software, materials, and project design best practices. Upon completion of the class, students will be certified to schedule time on the laser cutter for their own projects and will know how to use this versatile modern tool to cut and engrave intricate designs.
Customized Picture Frame Using the Laser. Students will be using the laser to customize and create their own picture frame while learning the basics of laser.
Design a Cutting Board Using the CNC Router. Discover your creative side while you design and customize your own cutting board with the ShopBot CNC Router. During this hands-on course, you will learn the basic steps of CNC production as well as computer design software. Covered topics include safety, operations, software, materials, and project design best practices. Upon completion of this class, students will be certified to schedule time on the ShopBot for their own projects. No prior experience or technical knowledge needed.
Fab Lab Family Days. Join us in the Fab Lab for a fun, hands-on activity for the entire family. We offer a featured activity each month to allow individuals and families the opportunity to learn fun and creative things you can do in the Fab Lab. No experience or technical knowledge needed.

In this hands-on class, students will create their customized stickers and t-shirts. Covered topics include safety, operations, software, materials, and project design best practices.
Learn to Use the Laser Cutter. Learn how to use the laser cutter to cut, etch, and engrave designs in a variety of materials in this introductory class. Using graphics software like Adobe Illustrator, you can make jewelry, decorations, phone stands, customized gifts, even business cards! With this incredibly precise tool, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination! Covered topics include safety, operations, software, materials, and project design best practices.
Learn to Use the ShopBot CNC Router. Discover your creative side while making unique wood designs with the ShopBot CNC Router. During this hands-on course, you will learn the basic steps of CNC production as well as computer design software. Kids Camps
AppVenture: Explore, Create, Code! Embark on an exciting AppVenture with us! AppVenture is a thrilling coding camp that delves into the world of app development using Apple’s programming language-Swift. Through the engaging activities, interactive lessons, and hands-on projects, campers will learn the ins and out of app creation. From brainstorming innovative ideas to bringing them to life through coding, participants will discover the exhilarating journey of app development while honing their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Join us for an AppVenture like no other and unleash your creativity through code!
Fab Lab Innovation Camp. What happens when creativity meets technology? Find out during this fun, hands-on camp using your creativity and the Fab Lab technology including laser cutters, 3D printers, and more to make your designs come to life. Campers will be able to take home their creations at the end of camp. Grades 6-8.
Minecraft Makers Camp. Design your world in Minecraft and 3D print, laser cut and build your characters out in real life using various Fab Lab equipment including laser cutters, 3d printers, and more to manufacture their ideas. Grades: 6-8.
Motorcycle BRC
Motorcycle Basic Rider Course. Learn to ride a motorcycle and be prepared for state licensing. This course provides online learning and actual motorcycle operator training in controlled range conditions. Riders learn basic skills of motorcycle operation, including effective braking, cornering, obstacle avoidance, and safe street-riding strategies. Curriculum Requirement: MSF Basic eCourse. Student must present a valid Virginia driver’s license or motorcycle learner’s permit.
Motorcycle Basic Rider Course 2 (BRC2). This course is designed to assist licensed riders in improving their skills and to provide a safe environment for them to expand the limits of their abilities. The course includes a brief review of basic skills, critical advanced turning, and braking skills, as well as counter steering and obstacle avoidance. The course is informative, enjoyable, and valuable. We recommend that riders refresh and hone their riding skills every year with a BRC2.
Motorcycle 3-Wheel Basic Rider Course (3WBRC). This course is designed to teach the novice or experienced sidecar or trike rider the skills necessary to safely operate a three-wheeled vehicle on the street, even if you have never ridden any kind of motorcycle. This 16-hour course takes the rider through the basics of motorcycle operation (controls are much the same as a two wheeled motorcycle), effective braking, turning skills and obstacle avoidance, as well as safe riding strategies.
Photography
Digital Photography: Basics and Beyond. Certified Professional Photographer Rick Dawson will show you the basics of digital photography in this fun, hands-on class. Students will learn to harness the full potential of their camera and/or smartphone. In this workshop, students will unlock the array of features that can significantly enhance the quality of their images. They will learn to utilize the grid on both their camera and/or smartphone and maximize the resolution for stunning results.
